All in all, though, it seems to be a reasonable place to start if I’m trying to study my own likes, dislikes, tastes, lacks of taste, memories and blindspots connected with hymnody. There is much in it that had a formative influence on me as a churchgoing hymn-singer, but there is also much that I have no recollection of prior to returning to the book as an adult, and occasionally there are items that clash in some way with my recollection.
